Hey everyone! I have to move to cleveland (or near cleveland) but have no idea about the area. I am not picky, but since I'm not too sure about cleveland I don't really know what it's like. From the area I was in it was very nice with all new houses but I'm assuming all of cleveland is not like that but I'm thinking it's probably not quite as bad as alot of areas in detroit are (I'm talking about abandoned houses all over, crappy neighborhoods, streets look terrible, crack heads all over the place etc.
So what I'm trying to say is that I'm not too picky, I can't afford to be
I was wondering if someone could point me to an area where someone of low income can find a nice 3 bedroom, hopefuly single house in a nice area? Also, someone mentioned something in Newburgh Hts for $600, how is that area, I believe right next to some part of Cleveland? I saw a picture of the house and it looks fine, I'm just wondering about the city and area and what you guys think of it.
Thanks for any help.

Newburgh Hts is on the southeast side. It is a very small suburb with its own police dept. Not to sure about the fire dept. Schools were Cleveland public when I lived in the area. The part of Cleveland it rubs up against on the east is the old polish area, Slavic Village, once a real nice area, but now on the decline. To the west is the industrial flats where the steel mills were. To the south is Cuyahoga Hts, a small suburb that is very nice. One of my ex wives still lives in Slavic Village off of Fleet Ave. She says they are trying to restore the neighborhood and get rid of the drug dealers but I really don't know about that because I haven't been back in five years. You should be able to find something pretty decent in that area for less than $600 month. Its not hard core ghetto yet.

Go to Google maps and zero in on that area, then use street view and you can tour the whole area.

Thanks for replies! I did the google map thing and got the feeling it was kind of like Hamtramck is to Detroit but if you're not from Detroit you wouldn't know what I was talking about! At least I don't see any burned down houses or anything like that! I can't tell just by lookin on google maps but it looks like it may be a quiet neighborhood.

It is like Hamtramck - but my feeling is, it is smaller than Hamtramck and hence closer to the "not so good parts of Cleveland." I liked Cuyahoga Hts more. But both border areas which were very like the rundown parts of Detroit that you describe. We looked at parts of Slavic Village that they are trying to restore but quite a few people who've bought these "restoration" properties (many new townhouses) are discouraged and have put their houses on the market. Hope this helps

Newburgh Heights itself is still a small, quiet residential area. Over the bridge into Slavic Village, well, in the 60s it was very much like Hamtramck in the 60s. Now? It's not mostly old Polish people anymore; there's lots of gang and gangster behavior, although the councilman there is doing his best to get abandoned houses demolished and getting redevelopment started again. I lived there for one year in 1994 and hated seeing the downhill slide, and when I visit friends there I can see it's still sliding.

The Cleveland rental stock has a lot more doubles than single houses. For $600/mo, you can get a half-duplex in most of the better parts of Cleveland and the inner ring suburbs.

Well, first off, Cleveland is an oasis compared to Detroit. Sure, we have some rough neighborhoods. However, the only areas you really shouldn't go in encompass about a square mile of the entire city. I've lived here for over 30 years and have driven to and in every neighborhood in Cuyahoga County. I have yet to see crackheads littering the streets in any of them. I know that they're here, but they're not very visible.

The Newburgh area isn't bad. It's semi-industrial and relatively quiet. It also has a relatively vigilant police force and it is much smaller than Hamtramck. Head directly south about a mile or so and you're in one of the best areas of the extended city (Independence/Seven Hills/Brooklyn Hts./Cuyahoga Hts./Valley View). For your price range, I would also recommend looking in Parma (which is actually more like Hamtramck, only it isn't that rough). There are lots of rentals in that area. Once again, it also has a very vigilant police force. At $600/mo., those are two good places to start.

I would have to disagree in saying Cleveland is an oasis compared to Detroit. No need to bash his previous city and quite frankly, Detroit trumps Cleveland in some areas.

No, it really doesn't. If I hadn't had to spend 6 months there for work, I might not argue that. Detroit proper is largely pure hell. Cleveland isn't.

In the form of terrible unemployment rate that tops 23%, auto-industry, and just down right miles of parking lot downtown with dozens upon dozens of empty storefronts, abandoned skyscrapers and casinos that have done jack for the city, then yes.

If you really want to compare, we could.
