Hi, I'm moving back to the area after being away for 6 years. I'm trying to find out what areas the current residents of New Bern would suggest as being the most family friendly (I have 2 elementary school aged children, and 1 toddler). I always thought that Trent Woods and River Bend were both nice areas, but since my husband is stationed at MCAS Cherry Point, I was wondering what subdivisions and areas between New Bern and Havelock are nice areas to live in? I know there have been so many new areas that have been built since I've been gone.....so I'm just wondering which ones are nice? I'd love....absolutely love....to live in an area with very little traffic and sidewalks. That would be perfect.
We have been living on a military base for the past 3 years and I guess you can say that my kids have had it very easy. Our neighborhood is so quiet, there is hardly any traffic, there are sidewalks, and in general we've felt very safe living here. But I know that I have no desire to live on base at Cherry Point, so now I'm just trying to figure out which areas would be the best for my kids. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Check with the housing office to see what's available and see if you would be placed in the new housing. They've torn doen Hancock and Ft. Macon housing and have rebuilt Slocum and Lanham. They are in the process of rebuilding staff capeheart.
Outisde of that I'd suggest Tucker Creek. It sits off of US 70 right outside the official Havelock city limits. It's close to the back gate, and Walmart (yea, Havelock has a Walmart now). Your kids would go to Arthur Edward elementary.

Arthur W Edwards Elementary - Havelock, North Carolina - NC - School overview
Another suggestion would be Carolina Pines. Brice's Creek (as long as you're not directly on Brice's Creek rd [speeders)] or any place that goes to to Brinson Elementary school. Also consider Newport/MHC. Morehead has actually surpassed New Bern in terms of retail in the past 6 years.
Here's a website to help with housing.

Thanks For the helpful information macjr82. Tucker Creek looks like a beautiful little area. I knew that Havelock got a Wal Mart a few years back, but I had no idea about the retail in Morehead. That's great news though =)

Also, your husband will get 10 days house hunting when he checks into his unit. In addition, you can stay at the TEQ on base for a nominal fee (all of which wil be reimbursed on your husbands travel claim) while you look for a place so don't think you have to rush into anything or sign a lease sight unseen.

Yes, Trent Woods and River Bend are great neighborhoods with very little traffic and plenty of family activities. Trent Woods has its own elementary school in the heart of the neighborhood, allowing many children to bike and walk to school. There is also a wonderful park (now with brand new restrooms) for meeting mom's and wearing the kids out before nap time. Both neighborhoods also offer a country club with military discounts (if that is your thing). Both also have great access to boating and all of New Bern's best amenities.
The Brices Creek area is quickly becoming overbuilt and is suffering from many traffic issues. Taberna and Carolina pines are going to be the most quiet, but there are fewer amenities in the area.
Good luck with your choices. There are military families all over the area. Make sure you get their advice on the commute.

Hello Snowshoekitty, I don't know what this development is called, but where I am is off McCotter and down Rice, where each block is a cul de sac so there is very little traffic since Rice is off McCotter and close to base. My bf is a former Marine and works on base. It is a 7-minute drive to the front gate on 101 and a shorter ride to the side gate, also on 101. I have seen many homes for sale/rent when walking on Rice so you may have luck in this area. They all are about 3 brs with 2 baths. They all vary to some degree, of course, some have a room above the garage, some do not. It is as you know, close to base, there is a Food Lion, Big Apple Pizza, Chicago Nails, and Taste of China on McCotter/Hwy 70, across from the Carmike Movie Theater. In the same parking lot is Smithfield, El Cerro Mexican Restaurant too. Across from Walmart is the other Food Lion, and it is 20-30 minutes in each direction to either MHC or New Bern. Good luck in finding your new home.
