I have been vacationing in this area for twenty years and I think these beaches are a lot nicer than the ones at home in NJ and NY. First the water is much warmer during the season and the beaches are more spread out not as crowded. Hope this helps good luck!
You won't find anything quite like the South Jersey boardwalks, but the beaches are much cleaner here, the water warmer, and the crowds not as intense. You've got Myrtle Beach, SC for the "boardwalk atmosphere" full of fun, rides, food, and entertainment. Then you have the NC beaches (Wilmington, Crystal Coast, Sunset, Topsail, etc) that make great family beaches. Somewhat quiet, yet plenty of food and fun. And, the outer banks are just incredible off-season (though the summer can get a bit crowded).
I'm sure you'll find something you wife is looking for, but you should take some time to ride up and down the Carolina coast to see the different personalities each beach town offers.
What's with all the Jersey people moving down to NC? Half of the cars at Wrightsville during the summer have Jersey plates. If I wanted to be surrounded by a bunch of loud, obnoxious guidos wearing a pound of hair gel, I'd go up to dirty-jersey.

You must be thinking of Long Branch, Belmar, and Seaside Park. Real Guidos and Guidettes there my friend. Now if you go to Avon, Spring Lake, Bayhead, they are very nice, but not as nice as Brunswick County Beaches.
