Looking for best family-friendly small town in Coastal NC. I'd love your thoughts on current life in New Bern, Oriental, Washington, other suggestions. Thanks.

Hello - If you want good comments, you should define your requirements a little more specifically. Most of Coastal North Carolina is family-friendly. But, do your require top-rated schools? Do you want lots of things to do? Do you want a really small-town life-style? What are your requirements for jobs?

For example, Oriental is great if you want to sail boats, but I'm not sure there is employment. I personally like New Bern, but I am retirement age without kids. New Bern schools have less-than-great ratings, and you should search the boards for comments on New Bern's activities. Washington has a few waterfront activities, but it's even smaller than New Bern.

If you have teenager kids, they would probably love a beach community like Topsail Island, and it's schools have a good reputation.

I am looking for a town that would have good schools for my second and third graders, enough of a population for my husband to set up a barbershop, and fun stuff for my older children (in their 20s) to do when they visit.

Sneads Ferry has a large population of Marines who constantly need buzz cuts. My husband travels to get normal man's haircut! We are about 3 miles from North Topsail Beach. The elementary school is average, and there is a Baptist private school.
