Fifty years ago, entire state rallied to bring battleship here

It was the largest man made object ever to fit into the Cape Fear River – and it almost didn't make it.

One of the best things the state ever did. We went to visit very soon after it opened. I was a kid, but loved it more than words can describe.

That must have been one heck of a sight to see a Battleship moving up the river.

I toured it just today - I was amazed. Didn't see any ghosts, though did feel inexplicably dizzy in the sick bay. Didn't see the alligator either. I loved reading the stories.

I really wish there was more of a push to get the USS Kitty Hawk up to Kitty Hawk. It has been decommissioned since 2009. But it will remain in Ready Reserve until 2015. Wilmington wants it, but they already have the Battleship.

And then in 30-40years (or however long it takes), Morehead City should position itself to harbor the USS North Carolina, SSN-777 submarine.

Then all three coast will have a Navy warship.

There's nowhere deep enough to moor the Kitty Hawk and the town wouldn't allow it.

They don't have dredging vessels? And why wouldn't KH not want it? That is the first I've heard of any opinion from them

A US sub would work well in MHD. We have a dive shop that discovered the German sub U-352 that sank off our coast. Olympus Dive Shop on the MHD waterfront recovered some artificats off of it.
