I think I know the answer, but I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised.
Is there any authentic Chinese food east of I-95? Anywhere? There must be someplace! I've been to Double Happiness (Wilmington) and I like it, it's just that their menu is very limited. Good stuff though, the best we have.
I don't feel like driving to Carrboro all the time (Gourmet Kingdom, authentic Szechuan Chinese).
Somewhere there is a place with a secret authentic menu, I just know it.
I can't take the generic brown sauce anymore and "szechuan beef" around here means brown sauce tinted red to give the impression of spicy. sigh
There is a great little place by the Food Lion in Hampstead, I think...if you go in there, you will see it is VERY authentic! Mostly for take out - you can eat in there, but not much ambiance...I forget the name of it...
Have you been to China to eat "real, authentic" Chinese food?
It is NOTHING like the Americanized Chinese food; it is much better here (IMHO). Had a hard time eating the food in China when we visited this past March .
I agree with the above post. Been to China 10 times and never found the Chinese food we have here. Not sure how it got changed but as strange as it sounds I like "our Chinese" better. At least they take the heads off the fish.

But...I don't want Americanized Chinese food...
The places I like cook the way they do in China. I'm not big on the different meats, but there are distinct flavors that are very different than the usual brown slop sauce...
(I haven't been to China, but I seek out places that don't change recipes for American diners) (Flushing, Queens (NY) has authentic Szechuan; so does Gourmet Kingdom in Carrboro)
