A couple friends and I are driving to NC from NY, and want to visit the outer banks for a few nights before ultimately heading to Charlotte. Can anyone recommend a general area or even a hotel/motel/bed and breakfast? We want the opposite of a tourist town - some mom and pop places and a beautiful uncrowded beach. I'm reading south of nags head but the options are so vast!! thanks!

Ocracoke is your best bet for beaches. Miles of beach with a nice town with lots of bars at the head of the island. I guess a lot of that stuff is mom and pop though it's gotten more touristy lately.

Some of the towns on Hatteras Island like Avon and Buxton would be nice for the real old school Outer Banks feel, but the beaches up there are really rocky with rough surf.

When are you going? The Food and Wine Festival is the middle of March and a Parade for St, Patricks Day. There will be a lot of Vendors, plenty of food and things to do. Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills area.

I enjoy the area close to the Hatteras Lighthouse. Doubt if you will run into a lot of tourist this time of year. Be sure to check on the condition of highway 12, as a lot of it washed away during a storm not long ago. I doubt if it has been repaired yet.

I guess I should have mentioned that we are going the third or fourth week in may, but heading back before memorial day weekend. Ocracoke seems beautiful. Avon and Hatteras are on the way, we could always stop for a few hours and check out some beaches there. Thanks for your help!

Hatteras Village would be my first choice, also check out the villages of Avon,Buxton and Frisco. They're all located on Hatteras Island. The Ocracoke ferry is in Hatteras Village and makes a nice day trip,or several days for that matter.

Have fun!

Mann's Harbor and Wanchese are your best bets for non-touristy places to hang out.

Stay in Avon, beaches are great, close to the ocracoke ferry(its free) for a day trip. Check out Rusty's Surf and Turf restaurant, for real food, not the usual fare of fried this and that. Rusty grew up on the OBX was a chef in NYC and NJ for 15 years before heading back home to open his own place. Guess what? He has a killer menu, and the staff is great. Enjoy!

If you're going before Memorial Day, not really any is that touristy. It doesn't rev up until Memorial Day weekend. But if you're looking for a place to go on the beach that is isolated, just find any of the cut through that aren't near a town. That stretch between Salvo and Avon are deserted, but beautiful
