Hey Yall,

As you can tell from my greeting, I've spent my life here in the South. I've recently decided to go back to school after spending 8 years working for my family's rental property business and after living in New Orleans for a time (and meeting the love of my life) I have decided to take my love of all things coastal/environmental and apply it to the Marine Tech program at Cape Fear.

Well, I suppose I jumped the gun a bit. Im thinking about it...but wow, some of the things I've read on here! I guess in New Orleans I have become inundated with civic pride (We prefer to think of NOLA as a brand, not a city) so I was shocked to some of the comments about living there. I'd just like to address a few:

Traffic will not bother me, because I grew up in Dallas, and New Orleans traffic is hellacious because of the volume of people on our archaic streets.

My fiance and I are both friendly people, and we would like to be able to meet people...but I hear the pubs downtown are unsafe? That's no bueno...I love a good brew.

The strip mall retail works out for me because my fiance and I would probably at least start off working at a restaurant or retail because there are so many (Although competition is tough with UNCW and the Comm College I bet!)

Crime is my number one issue (and coming from New Orleans, I would probably find Wilmington's crime laughable) and I'd like to find a relatively inexpensive apartment for under 700 a month if possible where I would find social residents but not an overload of partiers.

Any advice? I'm hoping to make my decision soon and throw myself into the Wilmington scene and make a home of it.

Thanks!

There are bar fights breaking out. But it's generally safe.

I think you would fit right in. However there are many students around UNCW, so look for an apartment with a slight older population if you want to avoid excessive partying.

I would look for an apartment as far from UNCW as possible. I think it might be a little quieter.

Thanks guys, any other input about where to go eat, etc and apartment complexes in the surrounding areas would be appreciated. Hopefully I'll be there soon!

That depends on what kind of food you like. My favorites are Cape Fear Seafood and Double Happiness. One website I find good for apartments is this: Wilmington Apartments for Rent - Wilmington Apartments Reviews and Ratings

I'm also a big fan of using Yelp for restaurant ideas.

My favorite haunts (eat, drink and hang out) in Wilmington are on the riverfront, but that's the historic district so places to live are probably a bit high $. You have to not be stupid wherever you go these days, but I think Wilmington is pretty safe.
