I just want to independently verify that overnight car camping on Cape Hatteras is ok.

I'm planning a trip there and have never been. Although the NPS website says it's allowed, I wanted to make sure and also to see if there were some areas were more popular than others for camping overnight on the beach. I don't want to run into problems with high tide.

Also want to make sure dogs are OK too.

It's a really really really long ways away from here so I just want to be as sure as possible.

You mean on the beach, car camping. I would definitely talk to the locals there to see where to park. Like if you go out on Buxton, stop by the Red Drum to ask advice.

See, I thought you could stay out on the beach with your vehicle all night, but you couldn't sleep, or something like that. I would call NPS locally, before you leave, and get a verbal confirmation. It seems like stuff changes everyday out there though.

Yep. That's why I figured I'd ask the locals.
I remember last year the NPS site said no vehicles overnight on the beach. This year it's different.
I'll contact them.

I was thinking somewhere near Rodanthe.

On NPS property, you can only camp at designated campgrounds. You can't legally sleep in your vehicle on the beach. There's several private campgrounds on Hatteras Island to choose from,in addition to a NPS campground in Buxton.

Happy camping!

Not to my knowledge it's not, but I could be wrong.

Consider a reservation at a campground just in case.

I like Ocean Waves Campground

Hope you have fun!
