Construction has begun on a multi-billion dollar project off 70 and the 43 connector in New Bern. The 550 acre tract will have shopping, movie theater, and apartments. Any thoughts?

We saw the announcement on TV, and noted the Bev Perdue's home town is New Bern. So, she wants a nice place to shop when she retires.

However, we wonder if the rest of the population can support such a large development. New Bern needs something, but so large?

I wish them the best of luck. It seems like they are trying the "Build it and they will come" business plan. They haven't announced any retailers yet.

The website is here ----> Craven Thirty

Their new shopping area will be a little less than twice the size of the new Walmart in Greenville. They're getting a 75 acre site for shopping and the Walmart/Food Lion/Sheetz corner property is 47 acres.

I can envision a whole lot of the retailers in that dumpy shopping center they have now, moving to the new one.

"multi-billion" in New Bern? That's crazy, I can't imagine what new will move that way.

If Burlington can support an outdoor mall, surely New Bern can. Good for them.

There's all the other towns within an hour that'd be drawn to it as well. Depending on pricing they might have trouble filling out the residential part though.

Speaking of Bev Perdue, I was at Harris Teeter in New Bern earlier today. I was husking/bagging corn and unbeknownst to me she was across the stand from me husking corn herself! She was very charasmatic and friendly. She was even hugging the local customers.

I wish the developers would disclose a few of the stores eventually being built. New Bern could really use a kitchen type store such as Bed Bath & Beyond.

Big difference between I-40 and US-70 traffic, unless they plan to make enough money during the summer months to cover the rest of the year.
