Don't trust anything you read on Wikepedia. Any doofus can do a write-up on that thing.
We lived in Jacksonville until 2006. The tattoo parlors and strip clubs are mostly found right off the bases. Working in Jacksonville and living in Cape Carteret or New Bern would mean a commute. Cape Carteret is 20 miles and New Bern is 37 miles from Jacksonville.
There are some very nice neighborhoods in Jacksonville. We thought it was a nice place to raise children. I would recommend our agent, Christina Tompkins-Garrett with Prudential Jon Koenig. Christina was born and raised in Jacksonville. Nobody knows that area better than her.
Location: Ellicott City, MD soon to be New Bern, NC

KY2NC - Jacksonville is a Marine town, and you find these establishments in any military town. They are usually clustered close to the base, so live on the other side of town. I can't believe there are more pawn shops in Jax than in Fayetteville.....
I don't like Jacksonville; it _is_ seedy, and lacks any sort of charm. You could try looking for a house in Sneads Ferry or Holly Ridge-those areas would be within easy commuting distance.
I lived in Jacksonville from 96-02 (stationed on MCAS New River) and yes there is a large concentration of pawn shops and tattoo parlors (I actually didn't think there were that many strip clubs around) but it's not that much different from any other military town where they're trying to swindle young Marines (or soldiers, sailors, etc) out of their pay. There's also a high concentration of car lots and fast food joints. I wouldn't call that "seedy". Your kids wouldn't really be exposed to that element, anyway, unless you've got them out on the town at 2AM.
It's the same way here in Fayetteville, with the Army. Out town is known as "FayetteNAM', and yours I hear is called "Actionville".
Look at the schools,
Education level,
Per Capita Income,
Housing cost.
J-ville is a military town and the economy is based on tattoo parlors, T*tty bars, pawn shops, and used car lots.
Search for industry here, done, 2 factories, pay $7 to retirees and military spouses.
My husband is in the Navy and we were stationed in Jacksonville for 3 years. We lived both on and off base. Most of the strip clubs, liquor stores, and pawn shops are are concentrated along HWY 24. It's not like they're located next to someone's home. You have to understand that Jax is a very small city. You can drive from one end of the city to the other in about 10 mins. The nicer areas are Piney Green, Gum Branch or just outside of the city, New Bern or for a more country setting Richlands.
