East Carolina also is headed to the Big East as a football-only member. Both schools will join the league in 2014.
The addition of Tulane and East Carolina will give the Big East 13 football members in 2014 -- UConn, Louisville, South Florida, Cincinnati, Tulane, Temple, Boise State, San Diego State, UCF, SMU, Memphis, Houston and ECU
Obviously this is a good cash grab for ECU. Playing in a bigger conference will boost the school's profile. However, the trend toward megaconferences is getting out of hand. ECU would've been a better fit in the ACC with Maryland leaving; heck knows Notre Dame has no business there- your state should at least border the Atlantic Ocean in order to join the Atlantic Coast Conference. But foobaw is what it is, and so's the money.
i hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the big east is basically collapsing.
Haha yeah, they're definitely jumping on a sinking ship. The ACC's picking up either Louisville or UConn. Maybe in a few years ECU will join the Big Ten or something.
It isn't "collapsing", but regressing to the former Conference USA. At least they won't play FB teams who still haven't played a down. As long as the increased profit is there, ya gotta go to it.
Gonnabe interesting where the non-revs go, though.

This will not happen. The Big Ten, PAC, IVY, Patriot, and ACC are academic conferences in addition to sports. ECU would somehow have to garner AAU membership and increase there national ranking by about 100.
Didn't the Big East lose automatic BCS (or whatever it will be called) qualification status in the new football national championship playoff thingy? So is there really any benefit to joining? Would joining for all sports allow you to recruit a better men's basketball team, for example?
I heard a rumor that if one more school leaves the Big East, the rest of our sports will convert over as well...thoughts? Anyone hear this too?
That seems logical. But this business now is logical. ECU is the only eastern BE school that is currently FB-only, but wants to be all-sports (Navy being the other). All of the western teams (Boise etc) are FB-only, and are staying that. But what will happen? Time will tell.

ACC adding Louisville takes a ding for their "academic conference" persona. And we could become AAU, and become top 10 in research dollars and we still wouldn't get the call. No reason to even think about that.

BCS is gone all together after 2013 (I think that is the correct date). But yes, the BE isn't included in the new "auto-bid" process. But, the BE TV contract (which is still in the works), should be significantly more than CUSA. Plus our non-rev sports won't have to travel to El Paso, and places in between.
Absolutely an all-sports invite would help with basketball recruiting. As of now, the BE also has non-football members that include Georgetown, Villanova, and Marquette. Recruiting would increase, plus the increased paycheck would help build more things and whatnot.
