Robyn826, congrats!! My husband and I are in the beginning stages of planning a move to Wilmington from NH. Glad to hear it's working out for you. Do you mind telling me what area you're in and how the neighborhood is? It's great to know you were able to find jobs!
I'm a retired, single female and thinking about moving to the Calabash area. Can someone give me their thoughts on the area...it's benefits and drawbacks...if there are any. I'd be moving from the Ocala,Florida area. Other than golf, what other recreational activities are available. Is there one plantation or subdivision that you would recommend?
For 15 years all I have heard, and I agree with, is, 'I wish I coulda', shoulda', woulda', moved here sooner.

Your final choice depends on your budget. There are probably hundreds of communities. Something for everyone.

WRONG!! Hawaii is known as a Blue state, a Democratic, socialistic, Obama producing state.
The sales tax is 6% in NC versus 4% in Hawaii.
The income tax is the same.
The property tax is five times higher in North Carolina ! I bought two townhomes last year, one for $120,000 and one for $130,000. The Durham tax office just assessed them at $145,000 and $172,000! Man, if I could sell them for that I'd turn around and do it! The property tax on the larger one is the same as what I paid for my $1.2 million home in Hawaii!!!
Yes, property is cheaper to buy in North Carolina, and gas is a little less. But I'm finding Hawaii, other than property prices, is actually a cheaper place to live than North Carolina!
You shouldn't compare the entire state to one area like Durham.
You are probably paying state, county AND Durham property taxes.
My property taxes are 10 times lower then what I paid in MD.
There was a report out recently, I can't find it right now, showing how far $100 went. N.C, faired the BEST in the nation.
I am a life long resident of NC. My family has been here since before the Revolution. Currently we are the 3rd state with the largest number of us citizens relocating from other states to NC. this has caused real estate prices to increase and taxes to increase as we have had to build more schools, roads, houses, etc. This has created a lot of jobs not found in other states. Natives are generally indifferent about this large influx of people. Most people liked things the way they were and don't like being told how much better they did it up north. We feel if things were so great where you came from, why didn't you stay? If you want to fit in, don't criticize so much. If you moved here and don't like it, no one invited you down,so just go back to where you came from.
We have been doing a lot of research, and applying for jobs. I think anyone looking at a Massachusetts address on a resume' will file it in the trash. He has very good credentials, work ethic, degree, experience etc. yet not one response to any applications. Jobs out there, just not biting?
That is what I hate about having to apply online versus in person these days. Employers look for certain phrases and anything that doesn't have it is trash automatically regardless of how good for the position they may be. I always try to follow up in person even if its with just the secretary or human resources person. Sometimes when they can see you and your personality it really helps. Obviously not so easy to do if you live out of state trying to land a job in a new state. Perhaps a short vacation to job prospect and check out some living areas. Much better to get a feel for an area before just jumping into it. If that helps any.
