We are planning a move from PA to NC within the next year. We have three children, ages 1, 6, and 8. We were told that Carteret County Schools (White Oak Elementary) are superior to Swansboro. Does anyone have personal experience with either of these schools to support/oppose this? There appears to be a lot of negative feedback from parents about White Oak Elementary on Great Schools, so I am now second guessing my initial preference. Anyone have any feedback?

Swansboro is a nice town, the school has a great faculty, your kids will probably do great there is you expect them to, it's not a bad school, but Swansboro Elementary is not even the best school elementary school in Onslow County, let alone Carteret, which is a better school system overall.
Edit: Also you'll often see a lot of the higher ranking schools with lower reviews. These are schools where kids get loads of honeworks, where teachers push kids and hold them accountable. These schools may also tend to focus on certain kids more than others, helping the kids that really don't "need" the help and not focusing on students that are struggling. A school like Swansboro is more laissez faire, where if parents are involved and your kid wants help, they'll get it. If you just want an 8-3 babysitter, you'll get that too.

Carteret County, "have two NC Schools of Distinction and one NC School of Excellence. Croatan High School received silver medal designation from U.S. News & World Report" according to Carolina East Health Systems.

Bill! Glad to see you back! I was listening to the radio in the morning not too long ago and one of the commentators/jockeys was "Bill Hitchcock" . I think the other was Raeford. Was that you?
