Learning About Wilmington. Can Someone Help? (Charlotte, Raleigh: employment, schools, living)

Hi,

We are looking to relocate from NYC to NC within the next year to year and a half. We were thinking about Wilmington, NC. Can anyone give us some information about it? My sister, brother in law, om, niece and nephew NSand myself would be moving. First, we have special medical needs as well as special schooling needs, as my sister has a multiple disabled son (who is 15) and needs special schooling/medical. Can anyone tell us what special education schools would be in the Wilmington area or better yet any area of NC as that is a priority? Also, I am looking for a mid size (30-50 lawyer) law firm in that area or within a reasonable driving distance to work at? I am a legal secretary. Although Charlotte would be better for my employment someone mentioned Wilmington to my sister so we thought we would check it out. Also..... another great concern is medical needs. Facilities for my nephew as well my brother law. A medical facility that would be most up to date.

If someone can recommend another part of NC that they think would best meet our needs that would be helpful as well.

I lived in Wilmington and while I cannot say with certainty on your special needs situation or your employment situation, as I've been fortunate to never have a need for them, I can tell you that we had a neighbor who's child had spina bifida and they were constantly making trips up to Duke. I also don't recall there being such a large law firm like you are seeking there. Wilmington is the largest city on the NC coast, so if there isn't one there then there won't be one within a reasonable driving distance. One thing you might also want to take into consideration, especially having a special needs child in the family, is the threat of hurricanes. Wilmington is ranked among the most vulnerable areas in the country. I know from experience how difficult, inconvenient and exhausting, not to mention expensive, having to evacuate for a hurricane can be, as I did it 7 times while living there. The Raleigh area is well known for it's medical care facilities and would probably better fit your requirements for special needs.

I agree with your advice This family needs a larger city like Raleigh for sure - Wilmington is just not that large, even though it is the largest thing on the coast.

Charlotte or Raleigh would be able to meet all of the specialized needs you spoke of. I just wouldn't think Wilminton would be large enough.
