Given the apparent complete dominance of Greenville and Pitt County, as evidenced by the massive numbers of Baptist churches, by the Southern Baptist Convention, it comes as a complete surprise that this is not the case. According to the 2010 Census, the religion that has the most adherents in Pitt County is United Methodists. This is also true of a couple of more counties to the east of Pitt County.

The conclusion that one can draw from this is that it is far easier to start a Baptist church than it is to start a Methodist church.

A friend of mine, whose father was a hard core Baptist made the following comment.

"Growing up we were either leaving a church or starting a church."

So true for good ol Baptist!

Interesting. I have been mystified why there are so many different flavors of Baptist Churches: Missionary, Free-Will, etc.

The Methodists have a solid following in Jacksonville and Sneads Ferry.

It would be interesting to see an actual breakdown. I would assume Methodist/SBC are neck-and-neck.

They're not even close.

Methodists number 16,530
Catholics number 5,489
SBCs number 6,746
All Baptist adherents together number 12,414

The number of Baptists is staying fairly consistent but their percentage of the whole is falling rapidly. In 2000 the adherent rate† was about 47 but it had dropped to 40 by 2010. As more and more people move to Pitt County, it is becoming more religiously diverse.

†The adherence rate provides the number of adherents of a particular group per 1,000 population. For example, in 2010 the Episcopal Church had an adherence rate of 7.6 in Autauga County, Alabama. This means that about 8 out of every 1,000 people in Autauga County were Episcopalian.
