Huh, I never would have guessed about the undertows. Also I never knew about the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" label.I know when i went to Myrtle Beach(SC) many years back, I remeber the water having rolling waves and I was able to float out pretty far and let the waves roll me back. Im not sure what time of year it was through.

I don't think the classification goes down as far as Myrtle, I believe it ends at Cape Fear by Wilmington

From what I've experienced personally, and from what I've read, Myrtle rarely experiences the kinds of undertows that NC gets. The further North in NC though the worse it gets, the Outer Banks get a lot of them in particular.

It's crazy what a difference just an hour or two in the car can make to how mother nature behaves!

Another reason for the danger to ships (especially in times of yore) was the hidden shoals. I have run up on them a couple times!
