Just a note on the mosquitoes....increasingly over the years I have come to the realization that you can not be outside during dusk...but prior to and after it is dark (like 9:30 or so) they aren't out. Its just that 2-3 hour period...of course if you are close to the water and have breezes they are not as bad.
I agree with GA about the screened porch if you want to be outside any time, but I have been camping outside in the east on numerous occasions and noticed that after 9 or so the mosquitoes go away.
Unless you want to be beachside or right at the ocean, I don't think you'll get the same feel with Carolina Beach. Though it's a great and friendly beach to visit (somewhat blue-collar still), there's certainly not much historical charm.
OTOH, there might be enough ocean breeze to drive away the mosquitos. For under $350,000 one can find interior street houses in Carolina Beach with enough yard for a garden, and they are one mile or less from the ocean. For example, there was a brick colonial, a cape cod, and tropical-style house which each had a lot of traditional charm that might appeal to the OP.
Regarding the mosquitoes, I'd suggest the OP include a neighborhood visit about 8:30 in the evening of a muggy summer day. Sit or stand still and time how fast the skeeters find you.

You should still check out Historic Edenton, despite the travel time to the beach. Edenton itself is a coastal town located on the Albemarle Sound. There are several walking areas along the park, downtown, and in nearby neighborhoods. The beach is a quick 1hr 15min drive with little development between, so it makes for an easy day trip. Activities like kayaking, fishing, paddleboarding, and sailing are popular in Edenton because of the mostly calm, fresh water access.
Apparently you work for the visitor's center since your ONLY 3 posts are about Edenton.
