Hello! I'm a boat owner/renter (not looking to buy a house) most interested in a marina for my 30' boat. I'm so sick & tired of Florida hostility against cruising boaters who live aboard, as well as the high crime, weird people, and overpriced goods & services.
The Carolinas look far more attractive. Are the marinas at least lower in crime, peaceful and the people at least open-minded toward ethnic differences? (Where I am in the Keys, it's full of the criminal homeless types, mentally messed up people, and bad service. The only good thing is the winter weather, colorful arts culture & good boating areas)
I'm a boating writer & boat mechanic, so it's easier just to stay aboard. Finding a new home port isn't easy but this forum has been great!
Rebecca

There are liveaboard friendly marinas in NC. A quick web search will point you toward a few to check out. Dock space with utilities will most often be between 200 and 300 a month. Shore services and prices will vary depending on where you pick. Waterfront anywhere is considered premium and boat owners in general are considered "rich." It is not always the case but it is the perception. You have to get to know people over time, bargain and trade if you can and at least have a bicycle to travel to local grocery stores and such if you do not want to pay a premium for everything.

Most counties will want to tax you for something if you stay there long enough.

Not sure how you define "hostility" ... Generally most people are friendly and full of southern hospitality in NC but mean people can be anywhere.

Winter can have some cold stretches. It's not the FL keys.

Good luck

Thanks for the useful info. The "hostility" in Florida is from wealthy waterfront land owners who don't want boats in their sight, and from law enforcement that cater to the highest bidder. Even some marinas here are rude- I'm guessing because I don't have a million dollar yacht.
Interesting is that whenever I meet & chat with people (private citizens) from the Carolinas and upper east coast, they are kind and sociable. (Thus the idea of relocating there)

What was your result? I'll be moving to Port City Marina at the end of the month.
