I am not quite sure why people are so paranoid about safety. I tell people that NC is mostly safe, but I am mentally comparing it to places where you might be mugged in the streets: West Baltimore, Southside Chicago, Newark, etc. I hope that answer is satisfactory to them.
OTOH, even the rural parts of North Carolina have their share of crime. On the nightly news, we hear about meth labs, arson, family disputes resulting in murder, etc. However, I believe that if you are not involved in drugs or other risky behavior, you will be safe.
