I believe that the economic woes of the nation put the brakes on Carolina Colours home building in a big way. I know it did for us. We have a nice lot there but since the nest egg shranks and the home I have in Northern Va has depreciated, we decided to work another year or two. We also put the lot up for sale and have decided to buy a waterfront property in Brices Creek or River Bend when we do finally retire and move. I think that many of the lot owners in Carolina Colours are in the same boat. Eventually it will be a great neighborhood. The golf course is still scheduled to open for play this fall so that should help enticing new owners to the development.
I have nothing against Taberna and agree that the homes are a little cheaper there but the homes and lots are more cookie cutter. The golf course is great there also.

Nothing at all against you Retirein11, but this is the exact thing that so many locals (I only been here a year and three months so I am not a local), have against Carolina Colors.
The electrical company put a ton of electrical infrastructure in out there, and since it is mostly lots and not homes, the electric company (City of New Bern) is not getting projected revenue, so the rest of us took a rate hike or two, to pay for the infrastructure.
This process had already started when I got here, but I bring it up in case you sense some latent hostility from some. Our realtor spoke about it a lot when showing us homes (we were only interested in historic areas
It is a very sore point with some folks that I have had conversations with.
Good luck on the water at Brices Creek. As you can see from an earlier post, I recommended that area, too.
Thanks for the reply LLN and no offense taken. Please note that the buyers in Carolina Colours were not told that the New Bern residents were going to have to pay for all the infrastructure in the development. We certainly assumed that the developer had fronted the money for the land, roads, infrastructure, golf course etc and was going to get all their investment back once the homes were built and occupied. I can say from experience that if the real estate and stock markets had not tanked, that many of those lots would be full of houses paying electric bills etc and life would be better for you and us. I can also say that we have met many of the current residents in Carolina Colours and all so far have been decent friendly people who want to be part of the greater New Bern community. I really believe that in the long run, Carolina Colours will be a great asset for the town of New Bern, not a drag on its economy. While we hope to be living on the river somewhere, we will still maintain the friendships that we have established there as lot owners.
Carolina Colours and Taberna are both wonderful neighborhoods. The difference that I can tell is that Carolina Colours has more trees as Taberna was clear cut and very few trees remain. Taberna is now fully developed while Carolina Colours is still in the development stage. The positive of getting in a development early is that you will save money and it is easier to make friends with neighbors when everyone is essentially new to the area. Carolina Colours also seems less "cookie cutter" than Taberna. It is entirely what you are looking for in a community. I perfer Carolina Colours to Taberna due to the trees and the way the developer has really used the natural beauty to enhace the neighborhood. However, both are very nice and you really cannot go wrong.
I know many builders have backed out of CC and the pool, golf course and many amenities are on hold .
Taberna in my experience as a five year resident is not kid friendly or teenager friendly place. Also many of the residents are of an older age and from the North Eastern States and quite a different culture. Thier HOA has the nickname the Taberna Police. People are fined if their trash can is visible from the road. They are are also fined if they park their boat or trailer in thier yard. My neighbor was just fined for having a portable Basketball hoop in his driveway pointing into a very seldomly used culdesac. I do not recommend Taberna to anyone and have been trying to sell my house for over a year.
Come on down here to Carteret or Onslow county....Nice homes and nice prices....
Just got off the water boating today....I use a private boat ramp that cost $50 a year...there are some free ones here as well....great fishng, clean air, and a nice ocean breeze....

We were in New Bern on Mother's day weekend and met with the Carolina Colours folks since we have our lot there and they didn't say anything about builders backing out or the pool. They did say that the golf course was progressing well and still planned on opening in the late fall. Carolina Colours is a victim of very poor timing. The recession couldn't have hit at a worse time for them. I believe they will eventually be a great place to live when the economy recovers. The future retirees like us just need to rebuild the nest egg before we can retire and build a home down there.
Carolina Colours offers a free social membership to thier club when you purchase a lot. To be a member of Tabernas club it is like $7500. Fee and 230 a month and you still have to pay for a golf cart.
You can join Star Hill Golf course here in Cape Careteret...They have special that I think runs thru July 1st....Pay $1500 for fifteen months membership, and you get unlimited golf after 1pm and use of the pool...pretty sweet deal for a 27 hole golf course....kept in immaculate condition...
The course has no goat paths, all concrete cart paths...Nice pro shop, the club is across the drive....and it has the Star Hill Grill downstairs...
Greg,
Taberna has a "special sale" on golf membership now for $1000. You are probably right about still having a monthly fee which I blieve includes a food and beverage monthly minimum. The golf course is nice but I hate those monthly fees.
