My family will be moving to New Bern soon and we're debating moving to Taberna or Carolina Colours. Any ideas on differences, pros/cons, etc? Thanks for the help!

Default Taberna or Carolina Colours

New Bern is such a beautiful place. While it is constantly growing, it still maintains a small town feel. . It's incredibly fulfilling to know I am helping them open a new chapter of their lives. With that being said, Taberna is a great neighborhood and I beleive more of what you are looking for vs. Carolina Coulors.

New Poster Person: How can you possibly know that Taberna is more what he is looking for than Carolina Colours based on a one line post????? That is crazy!!!

DeacBoy98: Please feel free to look at several New Bern threads on either the first or second page of the Coastal Section. I have posted a number of items about the area in and around New Bern.

I live in one of the historic districts and really like it. It seems to me, as I have said before, strange to move to a historic town, and then live in a newer area. But that is just me.

I find Taberna amusing, since so many people there will tell you, within 10 seconds of meeting you, "I/We live in Taberna." I have a number of students that live there and they seem decent, and the parents I have met seem very fine, too.

I think that a lot of lots have sold in Carolina Colours but there are not as many houses as you would expect. I think Carolina Colours is a lot more pricey, generally and geared to Yankees cashing out (before real estate crash) and moving to live easy in NC. Obviously a generality, but that is the impression I have and gained from long time locals.

I also think Carolina Colours is "hostage" to the developer, where Taberna may be more of a real estate sell, not through the development office. Not sure of that, however. THere is supposed to be a new Harris Teeter down that way, I think between them, in the mid term, so that will be nice, if you don't mind spending the HT premium for your groceries.

You might want to consider Brices Creek, a less structured development between Taberna and New Bern, or River Bend, about 5 or so miles south of New Bern on US 17.

Again, we are in a historic area (one of four) and like it very very much.

Good Luck.

I know enough to be dangerous, and I'm looking for some of the same info too.

From what I see, homes in Carolina Colours seem to be more expensive.

A qualified buyer's broker will get you all of the info you need and then some. Interview several-Contract one.

Default Taberna vs Carolina Colours

I live in Taberna and "roam" through Carolina Colours (CC) frequently. As other posters have implied, CC is New Bern's newest development and a home in CC will be more expensive than a similar home in Taberna.

CC is being developed and marketed as 'Traditional Style Southern Living' with the wrap-around porches and tall columns and hardiboard exteriors. Its in it's infancy stage and largely undeveloped, but there are some nice traditional brick homes already built. There are also Townhomes/Condos available and there is a proposed Golf Course.

Taberna is a well established neighborhood with New Bern's best Golf Course (IMO), traditional (Brick/Vinyl) style Single Family homes and sidewalks. Year round, you will find walkers and their doggies using the 2+ mile sidewalk 'circle'.

Both areas have their benefits, but Taberna is obviously my choice.

I visited Taberna a few years ago and played the golf course. I thought the community was neat as a pin, the lawns and homes very well tended (I was not surprised to learn that many current and former military personnel from the local bases lived there; the place looked spit polished to me.) The only nitpick I have is that many of the homes seemed awfully close to each other and exactly the same distance from the street...At the time, the golf course had been taken over by a young couple (he was the greens superintendent, she worked in the clubhouse), and I found their enthusiasm a positive sign (I hope they have done okay). In any event, I reviewed the community and course for a newsletter I published at the time and would be happy to email a copy to anyone interested. Just let me know. I also liked New Bern and had an excellent meal at a downtown restaurant whose name escapes me (it was on a corner and probably one of the more popular spots in town). Nice waterfront too.

The Chelsea --- Unbelievable for a town the size of New Bern.

That's it, The Chelsea. Ate there twice, 10 years apart, and it was excellent each time. Thanks.

Default Carlolina Colours is the winner.

Carolina Colours and Taberna are both wonderful neighborhoods. The difference that I can tell is that Carolina Colours has more trees as Taberna was clear cut and very few trees remain. Taberna is now fully developed while Carolina Colours is still in the development stage. The positive of getting in a development early is that you will save money and it is easier to make friends with neighbors when everyone is essentially new to the area. Carolina Colours also seems less "cookie cutter" than Taberna. It is entirely what you are looking for in a community. I perfer Carolina Colours to Taberna due to the trees and the way the developer has really used the natural beauty to enhace the neighborhood. However, both are very nice and you really cannot go wrong.
