My family and I will be relocating mid-August to Wilmington, NC because of a job transfer my husband received. We are looking to rent in an apartment complex for the first year. The two at the top of the list are Canterbury Woods and St Andrews Reserve (within our budget, amenities, good on-line reviews). Our main concern is elementary schools. Our son will be starting 3rd grade, the two schools associated with these apartments are Sunset Park ES and Pine Valley ES. I can see the test scores on-line, but I'd like advice from parents who are familiar with these schools. Thank you!!

I am not a parent, but I know the regular posters would advise you to go with whichever place is in the Pine Valley Elementary School district. It is a better-rated school.
I asked the mod to move your post to the Coastal NC sub-forum.

I have a daughter who will be in 3rd grade at Pine Valley in the fall. Despite the school's appearance, it is a very well run Elementary school. The AIG program (gifted) which starts in 3rd grade is run well and is liked by the children.
The test scores at Pine Valley have gradually increased since the last re-districting in 2008. The previous district had some kids being bused into Pine Valley from the inner city.
I expect this upcoming 3rd grade class (which is the largest in the school) to set the bar even higher when it comes to test scores.
Sunset Park has its challenges. Many parents in that area take advantage of the close proximity of CFCI (Cape Fear Center for Inquiry) and try to get their kids in there. As well the lower income children get priority for applications to Codington year round...so that's 2 schools that will siphon kids away from Sunset Park (which can happen in Pine Valley as well, but CFCI is not so close to PV and there are less low income kids at PV, so there is less effect).
