Doing a look see trip to some of the retirement communities in Southport, Wilmington areas. Have discovery trips at compass pointe and SJP set up. Anyone in ORP and can provide update
We are a Relatively young retiring couple ( 2 years to retirinment)
Late 50s
Currently live in Northern California but cultural east coasters ( orig from NY and NJ)
Not golfers ( perhaps take up in retirement) but like the feel of golf communities
Beach ( or near beach) and social community activities. Friendly and welcome to new neighbors.
Have dogs so need good size yard and a yard fence(a must) without pet restrictive bylaws.
Appreciate any updated views on where you moved (or will be moving) , pros and cons of communities, fees and charges, did you build or buy resale, flooding or weather issues etc. I've been pursuing other posts but most seem a few years old.

There is an extensive thread on Saint James. You just have to go to the end of it to find the 2015 posts. Furthermore, there have been numerous recent posts on Ocean Ridge and Compass Pointe. You just ave to use the search button.

May I suggest starting a specific thread to ask about fences and dogs. Put something like "dogs and fences in SJP, ORP" etc in the title. I believe most plantations allow you to have fences as long as you are not fronting on the golf course. They normally require specific materils and have height limits.

Your discovery packages are a good start! There are a dozen developments in Brunswick Co. that I can think of that are golf communities, most are fairly accessable to the beach.
You won't read/hear about some of them because they are sold out and the developers have left, the only homes for sale are private sales. Winding River is one example, they have a beach house on Holden Beach and their golf course (Carolina National) is a well respected, popular course.

We are building in ORP, no breed restrictions, leash laws, and fencing must be approved by the ARB. We have friends whose home is currently under construction and they have 3 large dogs!

Our neighbours are from NC, SoCal, NJ, Fla, MN and just met a couple from Pa. last week.
Good luck!
