Would appreciate hearing from folks who live in the Swansboro, Cape Carteret, Morehead City, Newport, New Bern, etc., areas regarding who is your Cell Phone Carrier.

As we are planning on retiring down your lovely coastal area sometimes this summer (finally) ... we do have a question regarding companies that provide Cell Phone service in your area. Are you happy with that Cell Phone Carrier? And also, as we will be calling families/friends in the Virginia, Connecticut, Long Island, New Jersey and New England areas, so we are interested in knowing how is your reception if and when you call those areas?

Thanks for your responses.

Best advice is to get a land line in your house. I have Verizon and we get no reception indoors. We have to go outside to make and receive calls. Big issue in Ocean Ridge Plantation..

Just so the OP knows, Ocean Ridge Plantation is nowhere near New Bern/Swansboro area.

I would check out T-Mobile. They have Verizon beat handily on cost and their coverage in New Bern and Morehead City was pretty good when I was out there a couple months ago. They also offer Wi-Fi calling for those who live in buildings where it's difficult for cellular signals to reach.

T-Mobile is beyond bad anywhere east of Raleigh. Verizon is the best around here. They have been since they bought Alltel a few years ago and integrated their network.

I agree they did used to be but this year they've added LTE all over the area. Check out the updated coverage maps.

t-mobile for $30 a month is the best for the price and the coverage is good+
It is GSM so you can buy an unlocked GSM phone off ebay.

As far as reception goes, US cellular and Verizon are your best bet.

Default US Cellular

US Cellular is wonderful! My parents have service with them and have yet to find any black out zones. I have Verizon. We live in Trenton and I can go to roaming walking from my kitchen to my bedroom. I can't wait to switch my contract to US Cellular.
