Hi all!

We're currently in Charlotte. We were looking to move to a small town in NY but my husband works from home now and his company restricts the states he can live. So, we've been looking at the Hendersonville area (mountains) and the coast! We have only been to Wilmington once and found it only ok. That was due to a bed and breakfast stay along a LOUD busy street, they closed off much of downtown for movie filming, drunk college kids walking around, etc. It wasn't the greatest trip and affected our thinking! However, we're reading great things about Hampstead and the Topsail schools. How are these areas from your point of view? Friendly and safe? Thanks!

P.S. If you have other great town recommendations with quality schools, I'll take them! My kindergartener has Down syndrome so a great school is a must.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience with downtown Wilmington. Hampstead is a normal spread-out suburb. Your budget is a bit low, as much of Hampstead consists of water-accessible communities or golf-course communities. However you could probably find a house with a yard in your budget.

The Topsail schools get good ratings based on achievement scores. I have no idea how they would do with a Downs-syndrome child. You might have to contact the school system to ask about your child's placement. The contact info and a newsletter is here: http://www.pendercountyschools.org/d...ional_children

Thank you so much! I am noticing the higher golf course prices, but maybe we could snag a good deal! Does it ever snow there? I'm not sure if you ever see that kind of weather, but I ask because the temperature was low yesterday, as it was here in Charlotte and we got some!

Yes it does snow occasonally in the Wilmington area, usually less than an inch. Currently, it is cold, but I expect we will get only rain.

BTW, I browsed through Realtor listings. There are many houses under $210K in Hampstead. Only a few have fenced yards, but it is not too hard to install a fence (or invisible fence) for a dog. Just be sure to check the HOA regualtions on fences before you commit.

I noticed you live in Snead's Ferry. There are some lovely houses on nice size lots there! How is the area for non-military families though? Are people pretty welcoming? Thank you for your help.

Military people are supportive, but it is sad to have friends moving away after 2-3 years. My community also has a few retirees and a few permanent civilian residents.

Generally, the schools in Onslow County are not as good as the ones in Pender Coounty.
