curious about new bern and surrounding areas (neighborhood, to live in)

we are looking for a place with a "small town feel" that just happens to be close to the ocean, we are trying to avoid tourist towns but want to live in an area that has hospitals nearby (my wife and I are both in medical fields) and has a young neighborhood so my children have other kids to play with. New Bern seems to fit that description, are there any other towns/cities like that on the coast?
