It is not "required" unless you have a mortgage on the house, then the bank will make it mandatory to cover their loan ... but no, EVERYONE does not have it on their home..... it's a question of how confident that the category four or five hurricane will not destroy your home IF and/or WHEN it comes through.

I would always buy it living near the coast whether required by a lender or not.

It's been awhile since a major hurricane has hit the Brunswick Coast and that's great but I would buy it even if it's not required anywhere along the NC coast. You never know....
