Relocating in Leland, NC (Wilmington: house, neighborhoods, school)

My husband & I are relocating to Waterford Development in Leland, NC - was curious as to why someone posted Leland as being "the butt of jokes"...what do you mean by that? We do not have school age children so this is not an issue with us. Please advise the drawbacks. Thanks
There has been a history of ignorance and poverty in Leland. I think it might be a case of the kettle calling the pot black or however that saying goes. The school system has been very bad here...but improving. Wilmington, for the most part, has little bragging room for their history also speaks for itself. I live here and when people from Wilmington have come to my house they have often been surprised that such nice neighborhoods are here. That however is no longer true. Almost everyone knows that there are many very nice communities such as Waterford, the jokes will not last very much longer. For a long time, there was no city sewer or water in this area because land would not perk. Now it is much more favorable for single family dwellings. And there are very many beautiful homes here. It has just been one of the secrets we no longer enjoy...the soon to be raised property taxes will testify to that.
