Eh, best source is Tideland Electric and CHEC's facebook pages. They have already repaired the first line. They are simultaneously working on putting poles up for an overhead line and digging down to line #3 that is compromised (water keeps filling in while they dig, so it's tricky).
Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative (CHEC) continues its execution of two simultaneous solutions to restore transmission service to Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands.
Significant progress has been made on the overhead solution, as crews have already set seven of the required 10 transmission poles. Work will continue this evening.
Excavation and dewatering continue at the site of the damaged underground transmission cables. Two of the three cables have been uncovered. The first was severed and has already been spliced back together. Tests on the second cable indicate that it is uncompromised. Crews are close to the third cable, but because of the complex dewatering process, conditions have been challenging. PCL Construction will continue to excavate the trench through the night.
Restoring permanent transmission service as quickly and safely as possible is CHEC’s top priority. The timeline for a complete repair ranges from one to two weeks.
The damage to the transmission cables occurred at the south side of the Bonner Bridge early on the morning of July 27 when PCL Construction accidentally drove a steel casing through the cooperative’s transmission cables. The cooperative is supplying power to the island via permanent and portable diesel generators.
While it pursues the permanent solutions, CHEC is concurrently working to expand the temporary generation service on Hatteras Island in order to accommodate a staged reentry of visitors. A mandatory evacuation remains in effect for all visitors to Hatteras Island.
CHEC appreciates the continued support of its members, as well as Gov. Roy Cooper and other officials from local and state agencies.
You would think that would be the first thing the project manager would do before you start. Then tell everybody on the site. See this on the plans drawn in red, thats the power source for all south of here. Stay away from it! Any questions see me. Guess that didnt happen.
