We recently purchased a home in the Southport area, not in a flood zone. Quotes for homeowners insurance seem high to me, even though I knew they would be a bit higher with the added wind/hail protection. Home is 2 years old, 2000 SF and quotes so far have been $1500 - 2000/yr.

We currently pay only $900/yr in the Raleigh/Durham area.
Do you find these rates reasonable?

Yes, it sounds realistic. We pay over $2600 for a home of 3400 square feet. We have it through Universal Property and Casualty, found through a Farm Bureau broker. It is a better rate than we found through State Farm or the other big firms.

Obviously, the wind/hail coverage costs a lot. We paid only $800/year in Maryland.

Sounds about right. My house is closer to the water, about the same size, much older and I think my insurance is about $1,700. Get a quote from Carr Insurance, if you haven't already.
