My family needs a cheaper way to enjoy the beach. Where can a family safely tent camp?

Spots in NC are a little hard to come by but there are a few. My fave is on the outer banks, Ocean Waves on Hattaras. But if you want to go closer than that try going down to SC near Beaufort to Hunting Island. This is a great campground with a lot of shade, VERY important at the beach. It stays pretty full from Easter thru summer so we avoid it until February/March. But with kids you wouldn't probably mind so many other families around.

Excellent recommindation I pulled up the website for you Ocean Waves Campground

It a great serene part of the OBX
restaurant recommindations Diamond Shoals In the dining room, you can get an up-close look at corals, anemones and other marine creatures in a 200-gallon saltwater aquarium.

And you got to go in the mornings for the Apple uglies at the Orange Blossum
Here is a good site for restaurant reviews
Outer Banks Restaurants - Outer Banks Restaurants Guide (http://www.obxconnection.com/outer-banks-restaurants.htm - broken link)

here are list of campgrounds on the outerbanks
I can find numerous things to do on the outerbanks that dont cost a penny.

There is a wonderful campground in Cedar Point, about three miles from the Emerald Isle western beach access.

This map shows the campground and area services. Zoom in and click on Croatan Trails, the campground is there.

The campground is right on the shores of the White Oak River. There a ramp launch area where you can put in kayaks and very shallow draft boats.

The sunsets are absolutely gorgeous from the dock there. We often see campers sitting there enjoying a glass of wine.

We also have a great time watching two ospreys that have a nest that is visible from the parking area.

The next to the last photo in this set of pictures was taken there from the small dock. All of the pictures but the snowy house were taken with five miles of the campground.

There are plenty of other activities close by. The trails there are some of the nicest in the area.

This is the official information site.

You can see pictures of the trails at this link.

We just returned from another camping trip to White Oak Shores, which is in Stella NC on the White Oak River. I highly reccommend it!

It's a REALLY nice campground... we checked out several others in the other when we visited that area last year and were not at all impressed, thus we went back to White Oak again this year. They've got a pier, a nice pool, etc. You could drive to the beaches if that was a must for your family.

Comer Resorts - White Oak Shores Camping & RV Resort: Welcome

I'm going to make notes of the other suggestions in this thread and check them out later this summer as well.
