Hello,
So we’ll be moving for a stint at Cherry Point. I have an elementary school age child. Education is the most important thing to us. But the info I’m finding is as old as 2010 for the schools I’m looking at, during my preliminary search. So I’m looking for updates on New Bern and the schools and other locations. Where can we live for the best schools? Our daughter would’ve likely gone into a gifted program at her current school, but I don’t seem to see that for the public schools that I feel would be the ones we’re considering. Gurganus, Creekside are the ones I’m looking at. We want to live away from base (looking at New Bern) yet Gurganus looks highly rated and their state report card looks good. Overall, it looks very comparable to Creekside. Cape Cataret/Beaufort looks good, but the elementary schools rate 8/10 vs 9/10 from Craven County. And they all seem to be B rated by the state grades. I did a search on private schools, but they are too religious for us, and we didn’t ever do Montessori, so I doubt the one near Jacksonville NC will allow us in later in the elementary system. I also want a place that is relaxing and welcoming, but with decent store options. I feel I may be asking for a lot because I’m not seeing a lot. I want a safe nice area with great elementary schools. Husband is willing to commute up to an hour, if we must, so long as the school is really good. Trying to make the best out of the situation, so I’d appreciate any helpful information! Thank you!

Here's the story on options for gifted kids in Craven County: "Gifted potential is nurtured in grades K-12 through in-class differentiation, pull-out groups, inclusion with AIG groups, or advanced course selection."
This is from: https://www.cravenk12.org/Page/1719

You might want to contact the program co-ordinator listed on this page. Gurganus and Creekside look like the best elemetary schools in the area based on Greaschools ratings.

Thank you for your reply! Yes, we’re leaning toward Creekside. They have consistent positive reviews. I was disheartened by some reviews at the other 2 schools that sounded like teachers were rude to the kids. We’re already dealing with that now, and while the teacher is not horrible, I feel she just doesn’t have the knowledge or patience to handle kids that need more. Thank you also for the link. My daughter had been recommended for gifted testing in K but we waited till 1st grade, this year, and were waiting to hear if she got in when we got orders to NC. I just want her to be challenged. Thanks again. Any additional opinions about family friendly places to live would be welcome if anyone has info.

Craven County tends to move Principals around, so, having said that, Ms Franks, at Creekside, is superb. She has been there several years, don’t know how much longer. Before that she was at Tucker Creek Middle School which serves the side of Havelock nearest New Bern. I’ve been gone several years so I have no idea about current situation but TCMS used to be a very, very good middle school.

I never messed with district boundaries, but I don’t think (BUT DONT KNOW) that you can go the Creekside - TCMS route. Of course with younger children, a middle school could change and change back during their elementary years. Good luck.

I always steer people away from opinion sites and to the NCDPI performance site. For 18 -19 for example, TCMS scored well above the Craven County AND NC in math, reading, and science. Here’s the link for Craven County:https://ncreportcards.ondemand.sas.c...?county=Craven
