Just what is that nasty smell that reveals itself nearly every week? (especially in the downtown area) It's a port city, I get it. But no, this is more like a paper mill smell. I have heard it's indeed a paper mill, but I have also heard it's a chemical plant nearby. I have also heard that it's simply the landfill. This isn't a different smell every week. It's the same nasty poop smell that lingers several days out of every week.

So, what is the truth? Just what is that smell and why are the people of this city not marching downtown in protest of shutting down the source of it?

There's 2 smells. One is the paper mill at Rieglewwod, west of Wilmington The other is a "cat urine" smell that occurs occasionally. The exact cause of it is unknown, although it is suspected that an industrial plant along 421 may be the issue.

I think that depends on where you are exactly, which way the wind is blowing, etc.

Or not blowing. The papermill seems to smell worse when there is no wind...the smell kind of floats east.

But It is fairly windy in SE NC, so it doesnt happen very often.

Edward Teach stated it's from an industrial plant. Fortran Industries along Rt-421 is emitting the cat urine smell.
I can smell it in Ogden area quite often and that is many miles from the plant. Can't be healthy.........

Let me guess.... You recently moved to Wilmington. Most likely the paper mill has been there for longer than just about anybody that lives in the area. If the mill was already there when you moved there, what right do you have to demand the shutting of the paper mill? The paper mill in Weldon is a large part of the reason why Emporia has never taken off.

Those smells provide jobs to lots of people. That's is why there is no protest.
