Hello all! We have some visitors coming in for Memorial Day weekend and they want to go to the beach but I am not sure of where to head. We have taken day trips to Wrightsville and Kure Beach and the drive was not bad at all but it was during the week. Does anyone know of where to go and or where to avoid heading for memoria day weekend? I know a lot of people will be vacationing and we don't want to be stuck in traffic!! Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Maybe you'll get lucky and fewer people will be heading there due to the higher gas prices?

Day trip only, or overnight? For a day trip, I've found Topsail Island's beaches tough to beat...far less traffic and parking issues than Wrightsville, and about the same amount of time in the car. If you can spend a night or two away, I'd recommend the Outer Banks. You can get to Nags Head from Raleigh in about 3 hours.

I would only do OBX in a day trip from the NE parts of the Triangle. Otherwise, you'll be looking at 6 hours or more in the car just for a few hours of beach time.

If you head to the NC/SC border there's a cute beach called Sunset Beach in NC. I bit of a drive for a one day trip but the one lane bridge onto the island of Sunset Beach is going to be replaced soon and is a neat part of the trip (assuming the bridge isn't broken and there isn't a huge back up to get across....ok, maybe not a perfect idea for a day trip to the beach!).
