Hi all, we are possibly moving to the Jacksonville area soon. We liked a few homes that were shown to us. They fell in the Southwest HS district. From what I understand Southwest is rated last in Onslow County. My daughters are in AP programs currently.
I would like to know the good about Southwest HS, and the bad. Should we steer clear?
The house in Jacksonville in really nice, move in ready. For contrast, there is another home in Swansboro That is smaller but nice and would need an addition. Cost between the two with an addition would be about the same.
I have made multiple trips over the last 6 months getting a feel for the area.

Im curious what some of you may know about the school and the overall area.

Thank you

Southwest High School has Advanced Placement and Honors programs. If they are not enough, Onslow also has an Early College program based at the Onslow Community College in Jacksonville.
Yes, according to the Greatschools rankings, Southwest is a 3 of 10, the lowest rated HS. I suggest you keep looking at houses, especially in Richlands and Swansboro. Also check the FSBO site, MilitaryByOwner. The major military turnover period is in June. Houses are selling within days in my area served by Dixon HS.
If homeschooling is an option for you, there is a growing community if home-scoolers. My neighbor's kid just got into a good state university after a home high school education.

Thank you. Yes we have been looking in Richlands, Swansboro,Maysville,Cape Carteret, Sneads Ferry, Holly Ridge, Etc.
My wife currently homeschools, and are involved in Co-ops here. The kids would finish out their last year in HS.

I would avoid Maysville addresses which are in Jones County. The Jones Sr. High School has very poor numbers on advance placement.

There are also a few small Christian Academies in Jacksonville which are unrated. I can't comment on them.
