I've posted a few times about relocation from Durham to Kinston and/or New Bern. Well, I made it! Been working my new job in New Bern for 6 weeks now and just had an offer accepted on a house (the market here is wild)! Anyhow, as I get ready to move my menagerie of critters, someone was talking about bear. I knew they were here, hadn't considered that they are NOT in Durham County or many other piedmont counties. Better yet, gossip has it that my soon to be neighbors have been feeding a momma and cubs in their yard! I do not want my goats and chickens to become bear food. Anyone with experience? Is an electric fence deterrent enough?

Thanks!

There's a reason the bear sculptures are everywhere in New Bern. lol

Black bears are mainly omnivores but are opportunistic at times but I personally would not worry about them eating your goats or chickens. Now coyotes, fox, owls and birds of prey would love to see those chickens out in the yard!

This is a questions that's new to this forum, but there is a lot of forest land around New Bern. I found this article suggesting the best prevention is *not* to store chicken feed in the coop. Bears are attracted to the smell of the corn in the feed.

I am guessing the bear will not bother your goats. Best of luck with the electric fence.

I know a couple women my age who live in New Bern so I will tell you that there are cougars there.

As for bear, secure your garbage cans (in the garage is best), don't feed birds, don't let pet food out overnight. Maybe take your grill in because they'll tumble it to lick the grates, don't leave food in your vehicles.

I appreciate the "fun" responses as well. 7 days until closing! Move over bears... here we come. I'll update ya'll on my convo with the bear-feeding neighbor. All I can picture is Betty White from the movie Lake Placid. :-D

I was somewhat surprised to find out feeding bears in North Carolina, while an incredibly bad idea, isn't illegal.

We have a woman here who used to throw raw meat into her (very small) backyard to attract vultures.
