Planning a trip. I've seen a 2010 post listing restaurants in general, but my question is specific: where do the locals eat out for ordinary lunch or dinner (rather than special occasion)?

El's in MC (which I believe is closed for remodeling through most of the summer), Big Oak Drive-In in Salter Path, City Kitchen in Beaufort.

For decent fried seafood that won't bust your budget I would pick Crab Shack in Salter Path.

I also like Anchor Drafthouse & Pizza is in the same area.

Cheap cash-only burgers, Royal James in Beaufort. Affordable lunch with variety I like tightlines in Morehead city. Seafood, I like Blackbeard's in Beaufort and MJ's in New Bern. She crab soup, T&W oyster bar. Some other faves: Big Rock cafe (formerly grumpy's) in Morehead, Yana's for breakfast in Swansboro, Gaffers for a nice evening dinner.

Thought of another question: what are iconic desserts or locally recognized desserts? Thought of this when I saw a reference to Atlantic Beach Pie. The saltine crust sounds a little weird to an outsider, but I plan to try it!

I'm not sure any restaurants have Atlantic Beach Pie on the menu. Its more of a make at home thing.

In my notes I have "Sanitary Fish Market in Morehead City for Atlantic Beach Pie." However now that I look, it doesn't seem to be on their online menu. Oh well.
