My hubby may get a job as a paramedic on OBX and it could happen fairly soon. So, as a good wife, I do my obligated duty to panic. Yikes, 2 children, 2 cats, 1 dog and I'm supposed to find a rental? We don't want to buy right away because we're not really sure if we want to settle on the island itself or if he will commute from inland.

I have done sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much research on the mainland and I know how far the little towns are from OBX. My problem is finding rentals (mainland or isle) that are through the owner themselves. I keep coming up with real estate agents listings for owners. When we visited there in February to see which areas we would like (or at all - silly thought) we spoke to a local that said DO NOT go through an agent because the price will be much higher.

My problem is that I cannot find rentals by owner. I've looked on craigslist but I am a bit sceptical because many just seem like scams.

Help, please.

yes you could run into scams on craigs list looking for owners to rent but it probably your best option other choice for you is to scan local papers of that area online and also check the Raliegh classifieds and Charlotte Classifieds for rentals that way.

If you time it in the off season you can get very good rates even with rental property managment.

Let me put it this way I found a very nice rental 4 bedroom, 3 bath pvt pool and hot tub for 7 days in May for $565 and I only had to pay $100 in rental fees to that company that is better than you will find if you went with a motel.

I had a kitchen fully equipped, nice entertainment system, etc sometimes it worth 100 bucks for peace of mind.

I thought about subscribing to a local newspaper because I have only found one that has classifieds on line. Does anyone know the names of the most popular newspapers in that area?

I hadn't thought of checking the larger cities. Would they have rental ads for the OBX area?

I need a long term rental, so the weekly rentals won't do for our family. I need at least a year lease.

I have found the Outer Banks Sentinel has classifieds online.. but most of what I have found have been realty companies for long term rentals. Good luck.

many rentals will lean on rental companies since they can maintain the property without the owner having to live near there.

does anyone know what the closest town to commute from would be? Keeping in mind it has to be a nice town. It doesn't have to be a big town, but good schools and low crime is a must.
