We were considering a future move to Wilmington....I had no idea there was so much crime.
OOh,yes......way too much for a town this size. It just keeps getting worse due to gangs and drugs. VERY disturbing. I would think long and hard before moving here for many reasons.

How is Monkey Junction? We've heard good things about it...is it a good place to raise a family?

Monkey Junction is just like everywhere else.......it all depends on where you live. We had friends who had to move from there because of the crime, but they were in an apartment complex which I'm sure would probably be worse than a family oriented residential neighborhood. We looked in that area before purchasing our home and we didn't care for it,but that's just our opinion. You'll have to check all the different areas out and make up your own mind based on your likes and dislikes.
Well, just from driving around that area (Creek apts), I would never live there/walk around there.. so, I mean, if you would have picked a safe & non-sketchy area to live in, I don't think you would have had the same experience. I wouldn't go to that Food Lion on Dawson either. The crime is in pockets lagoon.. you will know what's a bad area, clearly you can just tell by looking pretty much.
There are some great neighborhoods just outside the downtown area, as the population keeps on going up, now over 100,000, its proof that Wilmington is not all bad! A drive around the area would soon tell you where you should stay away from and where you would like to live. Come on now, Dawson Street! I don't even like driving on that road, never mind walk anywhere near it. Obviously if you look in the UNCW area to live, you will find a lot of college kids living in those apartments and therefore a lot of parties and problems, same with the neighborhoods east of 3rd St, there are a lot of public housing projects and a lot of gang members living there.
For proximity to the down town area and reasonable rent, Monkey Junction is a good place to start.
I'm sorry that you have had such a bad experience and hope things look up for you.
"Wilmington’s estimated population of 100,192 as of last July ranked it the 273rd most populous city in the country. That also made it the smallest city with a count of 100,000 or more."
Please stand corrected about the population of Wilmington, this article was in the Starnews a couple of weeks ago.
You also seem to be misinformed that there is no gang activity in Wilmington, thank god we are not east L.A, NYC or Chicago's southside, but we do have a huge problem with drugs and where theres drugs sold on the streets there will be gangs involved!
Location: I currently exist only in a state of mind. one too complex for geographic location.

where there's drugs, there are gangs? guilt by association? I am not buying it. I know about the drugs, but haven't heard a single thing about gang activity on the news or in the papers.
