Can anyone tell me anything about currituck county or more specifically, how bad is the commute to VA (hampton, VA actually, dh's company has an office there and he might be able to transfer). Also is there crime, schools not important no children, how welcoming communities are to gasp yankees , etc. All the typical stuff someone would want to know about an area before relocating. We'd like to live in NC thought (somewhere around places like Moyock, Knotts Island, Currituck, shawboro and other surrounding towns). Most importantly (at least to dh) are there palm trees in Currituck County, NC.
Our current town doesn't have much (a restaurant, post office, card store, gift shop, cafe, that's about it) and we're fine with that. We have very little crime (can't remember the last time I locked my car doors) and it's peaceful. If i could pack the town up and move it to NC, I would.
While our town is very nice and peaceful, the people just seem to keep to themselves and we are miserable during the winter (10 below, 15 days straight is not very fun), taxes are going up by the minute, real estate is insane and the town next to us may get a gaming casino in the next few years which is going to change the whole rural county area so i don't want to stick around any longer.
Commuting from the areas you mention is relatively easy. There is a significant
rush hour problem around Chesapeake and Virginia Beach.
Not to cause a problem but the areas mentioned at the KH land company post are
really not convenient for a commute to Hampton.
I am buying a business in Duck. It encourages OBX locals to shop here rather than drive
the 2 hours to southern VA. (North Beach Outfitters!)
There are several new developments along Rte.158 and Rte.168 in NC.
BE CAREFUL.
There is a cross sound bridge in the works. You wouldn't want to buy something
with a highway or bridge view, I suspect.
I suggest you do extensive research on your commute and localities. You have time, I hope. The real estate market is soft, likely to get softer.

jumper thanks for the information. hubby and i are officially moving from mass. hubby accepted a job in newport news. we're still hoping to live in NC (even found an area we like - tulls bay colony in Moyock) but the distance from door to door is a bit much. we prefer to live on the water (whether canal or river or sound doesn't matter). where is the cross sound bridge? you mention KH land company post what exactly are you referring to? (confused look on face). we may also look in VA along the coast (near the border of NC) is that area called tidewater? BTW, nice website. good luck to you with your new business.
I think the post on KH Land was removed for advertising...cross Currituck Sound Bridge coming across from Aydlett or WaterLilly...to Corolla in 2008 or 9...We're coming permanently from CT where are you coming from in MA?..one of our sons goes to school in Worcester...have been to the coastal area for 15-16 years...You are right..the commute can be a bit difficult to Newport News..I agree that your best best might be Tidewater..I know someone in a realtors office in that area..e-mail me privately, I'll send you the contact info if you are interested...good luck, dan
I live in Moyock myself been here 10 years. Although you'll see lots of rebel flags and I love G.R.I.T.S. bumper stickers I think the area is very accepting of "yankees". You shouldn't have any problems with that. We have one couple in our Church that is originally from Mass. we love them even if they do cheer for the Patriots at our annual Superbowl party.
Traffic is always a problem in VA around Chesapeake, VA Beach, Norfolk, Hampton/NN, your husband's commute will be an hour each way in good traffic which there will be bad traffic every so often (depending how early he leaves in the morning). Coming from points north of Hampton/NN won't be much better though.
Any particular reason you want to live in NC? Maybe there is someplace closer to Hampton/NN that you could move that would be closer. If it's because of the surfing you will still be about 45 mins from the OBX in Moyock. Not that I'm trying to dissuade you from Moyock we'd love to have you.
Again he might be able to find a bus or a commuter van to ride with if he looks around. Anyway, I'd be glad to answer any other questions on Currituck you have if I can.

We live in Camden just moving from Michigan last Summer. It is not the area I like that well because I like to have major stores with in 20 mins from me and the largest is Wal Mart of which I 'm getting sick of. My husband works all over Hampton Roads. He heads home around 5-5:30 and it can take him forever. If we stay we want to move to Virginia closer to the areas he works in as the driving back and forth eats a lot of time. We just went through the areas you are thinking of today as we went to Nags Head. I love it there but the traffic that way is really bad in the Summer.
