Take one road-HWY. 70 straight from Raleigh to the Crystal Coast of NC.
The Crystal Coast’s 1064 square miles is nearly half land and half water. It is composed of 531 square miles of land and 533 square miles of water.

Crystal Coast beaches face south from the southern point of Core Banks at Cape Lookout to the west end of Bogue Banks. Therefore, the sun rises, sets and tracks along the ocean beaches for the length of each day. The day-long sparkle on the ocean water gives the Crystal Coast its moniker.

I still like plain 'ole Nags Head the best but they are all good. Any beach which allows you to just pull off the highway and drive down to the water is ok with me.

Oak Island / Long Beach are great family beaches and the rates are reasonable. Plus you are only minutes from the waterfront of Southport, which is a nice day trip for shopping and good eats.

From Raleigh you can get to Emerald Isle, Topsail Island, Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach and Kure Beach in 2.5 hours or less. You can compare rentals at North Carolina Beach Vacation Rentals - RentABeach.com . My favorite is Surf City on Topsail Island--it is easy to get to and has a fun, small beach town feel and it's less pricey than Wrightsville Beach or Emerald Isle.

Very expensive,compared to what?

A 3 bedroom year around rental will cost between $900 and $1200 a month for the average home.In return you live in a place that's relatively safe, with a great school system and a good quality of life.

Pretty small compared to what,Wilmington?

According to City Data, there were 33,584 residents of Dare County in July of 2008.Our population has nearly tripled since 1985.

OH THE ISOLATION

Drive the bypass in the winter between Kitty Hawk and Nags Head and this beach is full of life, even in the dead of winter.

+1 for Oak Island, great beaches many homes are within walking distance to beach, some even have Intracoastal Views as well, like mine.

Most street ends have parking on both ocean and Intracoastal side of Island.

Beach faces south so ocean swells are minimal (too bad)...always some wind.

Plenty of homes and lots for reasonable prices, rentals cheap as well.
