I live up near Albany and we've never stopped on the way down. Not for the night anyway. I would say...Maryland would be about halfway. Or else Delaware. You could stop in Virginia Beach, but its not that far from the OBX.

Fredericksburg will be your best value. It's right off of I-95. Has some historical significance, and as said, has tons of places to eat and stay.

edit: In addition it's the edge of the horrible DC metro area traffic. So, depending on what time of day you're travelling, you'll be ready for teh respite by the time you get there, and you'll have smooth sailing from there on out to the OBX.

edit 2: smooth sailing unless you use i-64 to go to the OBX and hit the tunnel at the wrong time of the day.

williamsburg, yorktown, and jamestown are only 2.5 hours at the most from the outer banks. perfect stopping spot. you won't want to leave!

When we drove down, we stopped in Dover, Delaware. It was a dull area that we were in, so someplace closer to Norfolk may be better for the kiddos.

I think Delaware is the longest state. Or so it seems.
