I have recommended the Spouter Inn to a number of city data folks, and as far as I know everyone has enjoyed it. You get to dine on the water.
It is one of our favorite places in Beaufort.
The Spouter Inn has some really good food. But you should ask to sit outside, inside you don't get the same experience. Save room for dessert too!! i love their carrot cake!
We love Sam and Omies! One of those places we always go twice during our weeks there and it always has a lot of (what appear to be) natives there so that should tell you something. It's a "shack" kinda place though, definitely not upscale, excellent breakfasts.
As far as Buxton and Hatteras, there ain't much but the cafe at Teach's Lair Marina is one place we usually get to. Howards Pub on Ocracoke is a laid-back and fun place with good, not great, food. Have fun.
Well we are back and were quite happy with all of our restaurant selections. Our accomodations were at the Breakwater Inn in Hatteras Village. IMO, this is a great little place to stay, great views, nice and clean room and a friendly staff working the front desk. Our food stops included the following and were all good choices, at least in our opinion. Here are some quick reviews.
Manteo - Poor Richard's Sandwich Shop - Great sandwiches and atmosphere right on the historic waterfront
Buxton - Sandbar & Grille - Food was great, dining room kind of small and I wish they had outdoor dining options to take in the sunset, but still an overall enjoyable experience
Hatteras Village - Breakwater Restaurant - Had drinks and dessert here after dinner. Great atmosphere out on the patio and very convenient to the Breakwater Inn where we stayed
Hatteras Village - Sonny's - Great local hangout with delicious, affordable and quick breakfast
Ocracoke - Howard's Pub - Fun atmosphere and I thought the food was quite good. Not too crowded on a Wednesday at lunch
Beaufort - Spouter Inn - Very good food and sitting out on the deck is a must. The staff was also very friendly. Great view of boats and wild ponies across the water
Overall, we really enjoyed our 2-day whirlwind trip down 12 South and will definitely be back for a week sometime in the future. It looked like there were many rental options in Waves, Rodanthe, Buxton and Hatteras.
So glad you had a good time! If anyone else is looking for a getaway, the end of Sept. and October are pretty times to be here...weather still soft, beaches uncrowded, no waiting at restaurants...guess you'd call this the elbow season.
Maybe I'm odd, but I even like winters in summer towns--I don't mind walking on the beach with the pooch, even if I'm wearing a ski jacket and wool hat...something about the solitude, the bracing wind and the endless sea singing to me calms me down in my deepest places...makes me dream up plots for books I'll likely never write, but what fun to dream a little dream...

Same here...my extended family usually rents a place at Wrightsville for a month during the winter and it is a great place to find solitude. I have been known to set up a hammock on the beach and read while bundled up. Also, it is nice to go there in the off-season and not have to worry about the crowds or parking. I did like how the southern portions of the OBX seemed to be less crowded, even on those nice summer days we were there. Not sure the weekends are though...?
Don't know where you are headed back to, but if you are going up 70, wait and eat at The Chelsea in New Bern. Possibly the best in the state... certainly as good as any.
I like El's in Morehead (burger joint where you sit in the parking lot with the seagulls). Chelsea is very good, but I think there are better restaurants in the state! Aqua in Beaufort is very good, but it's not on the water if that's a factor.
Here's a couple of my favorite's in Morehead City and Beaufort area:
Aqua...114 Middle Lane Bft....the creme brulee is to die for.
Stillwater..300 Front St Bft....try the Shrimp 'n Grits...yummy
Piccata's...506 Arendell St. M City...the chowder is the best yet.
Beach Bumz Pub and Pizzaria..515 Arendell St. M City...laid back with unique home made sandwiches, etc.

El's is awesome! You're killing me! We just got back from over there and we miss Beaufort/M.C. already.
