Hello. I am my elderly mom's caregiver who has lost her leg and has had cardiac arrests and blocked arteries. I want her to be happy and she so much wants to go to North Carolina along the coast. We are from New England and had to leave because we could not get her wheelchair out during much of the winter. She loves the warmer weather but does not want Florida. North Carolina is her choice and looking at Wilmington area. I have been Googleing the Wilmington area and she is so excited over what we have been reading. I just do not want to make a mistake as this move will take all we have to get out of New England and must be right for her. Any suggestions and thoughts will be so appreciated. Does anyone know if there is elderly housing as we are on a very strict budget? Any suggestions for an extended stay motel or hotel until we can get a better feel for where we are to make a final move if she is happy? Thanks so very much.

Wilmington as NC's largest coastal city also has the largest hospital of any coastal city in the state. It is far enough south that it will not get a real winter. Compared to New England, even Asheville (in what passes for mountains in NC) does not have a real winter. There are other cities along the coast with good hospitals, Morehead City comes to mind most easily, smaller, closer knit, friendly. Doesn't have all the amenities that come with a larger metropolitan area, but, is friendly, comfortable place. Either would be a good choice.

suezanneb,
If at all possible-Visit first. Coastal NC is diverse. Wilmington & Morehead are as different as New Bern & Buxton. There is no way to know a place online.
A little visit first before a big move would be highly encouraged.

Contact the Area Agency on Aging 910-395-4553 to ask questions regarding services and housing available. Google them too. They have a website with lots of information. I second that suggestion about a visit. The hotels are very reasonable in the winter.
