We are moving to New Bern in April, have already bought a house. We are active retired people who love the outdoors but not golf. What kinds of groiups are in the area that would be good to join?

There are sooooo many clubs in New Bern. It really depends on your interests. If authors are of interest there is a writers symposium with Nicholas Sparks and Diana Gambaldon coming up in the next few weeks. There are many book clubs. There are many artists groups in town that travel to art shows and volunteer at the Bank of the Arts. There are many outdoors clubs, yacht clubs, kayaking clubs. There are country clubs that allow you to join as a social member. The best way to find out about some of these clubs is to do a little light volunteering - that will introduce you to many people who are retired and many have similar interest. Talk to the shop keepers downtown - everyone is sooooo looking forward to the new bridge opening and the spectacular summer ahead with downtown back in full swing!

The Twin Rivers Kayak Club, something like that is world class. They have frequent outings and go lots of places. If you ***, you would love it, and if you do not ***, you should start and then love it. Beats golf, anyday.
