We will be relocating later this year. We currently live in PA and summer at the Jersey shore or in Maryland. There are several destinations between the two that have boardwalks with lots of shops/games and amusement rides for the kids. Was wondering if there are any beach destinations in NC or within say a 3 hour drive of the Raleigh area that are similar to this.
Thanks!
The outerbanks in NC is definatley not the NJ beach scene. you won't find rides and boardwalks there, but it's a more relaxing vacation. I found I didn't miss the rides.
I believe that the Virginia beach scene is more similar to the Nj one though.
We are heading to New Bern this weekend and will be checking out Atlantic Beach and the surrounding area. When I get back I will let you know what I thought of it. I am familiar with the beaches up north and on the Jersey shore, from LI, so I will be a pretty good indicator.
Thanks! We've been to the Outerbanks (Nags Head) a few times and my husband and I have really enjoyed it there. Of course our kids missed the carnival atmosphere of Jersey (Seaside, Ocean City, Wildwood) or Maryland (Ocean City) and I imagine if I were a kid I'd miss it too.
jkmeca11 - when you return from New Bern I'd love to hear about it.
Also - if anyone knows anything about Virginia Beach I'd love to hear about that too.
Thanks!

Jkmeca, while you're there, set aside some time to visit Beaufort. There's a nice historic district on the water there where you can hear live music & eat some local seafood. You can also take a boat tour & hear the colorful history of the area (one word: pirates!) & see the wild horses on the local islands. Visiting Beaufort was my favorite part of my trip to Atlantic Beach.
We are in myrtle beach right now, and I would agree it is definitely the "lots to do" kind of place. Broadway on the beach, barefoot landing, etc tons of shopping and things for the kids to do. So, if you want to get away and just enjoy time on the beach, then go to some of the north carolina beaches, but for a beach experience that is more crowded but with lots of things to do off of the beach, go to north myrtle (my preference)

It would probably take about 3 hours to get there. It is definately worth it. Look up Myrtle Beach on the web. We used to live in PA and would go to Jersey shore. This is similar to it. The shops and amusements are on one street over from the beach. They go for about 2 miles. There is a small boardwalk also but not like Jersey. There are tons of stuff to do. The action is the same too. The hotels are reasonable also. If you you go past Sept. the rates are dirt cheap. It is fun! We have 2 teens and they love it. You can crab there too, so bring your traps and chicken! We also get an efficency, then we can cook. If you need more info, let me know.
