Hello, I'm new to this forum and apologize if this isn't the right place for this. Last December I found an old model t Ford wheel approximately 100 years old, on the riverbank sticking out from under the sand. I dug it up and brought it home, but couldnt find any advice on how to preserve it as it dried.
It's been kept wrapped in a tarp in a cool room for a few months, but unfortunately the wood has started to crack severely in several places. I can't post pics, but it looks similar to the wheels here (except in much worse shape): https://www.google.ca/search?q=Model+t+Ford+wheel&lr=lang_en&client=ms-android-bell-ca&hl=en&tbs=lr:lang_1en&prmd=sivn&sxsrf=ALeKk03-A66ZAAC8EHXaOZ4WDls5AMAvCQ:1615085896958&source=ln ms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjVoq3pl53vAhXsMVkFHays AaYQ_AUoAnoECA0QAg&biw=320&bih=586#imgrc=p9MqqXbNl Vhv7M&imgdii=Z6x4qf_3gDdhxM
It's made of both wood and metal. It's also started to chip large chunks of wood off. Any advice on how to clean the sand off and preserve the wood (what's left of it) would be helpful. Thanks!
Once the sand has dried (and by now, I assume that it has), you can remove it with a bristle brush. I have had good luck using Formby's tung oil to preserve wood.
