It's Michigan vs. Michigan State in this long standing rivalry this coming Saturday in Ann Arbor.
Could this be the biggest game ever in this tradition series. For years, U-M blocked MSU's admission to the Big Ten, but in 1950, their efforts failed and the Spartans joined the conference.
In the early years of Big Ten play, especially under Duffy Daughrety, it was MSU that was the in-state power, U-M in a rare position on the side lines. Things sort of got back to normal when Bo Schembechler became Michigan's coach and the Big Ten became Michigan, Ohio State, and the 8 dwarfs.
Today, like not era since MSU joined the Big Ten, the power seems to be reversing or at least equalizing. Michigan has been down for a few years. It is off to a good start (5-0) this year, but the competition has been weak (Notre Dame would be a nobody here if it didn't carry the name "Notre Dame").
Indeed, there is reason to believe that U-M may be off its stride, perhaps Nebraska like....as the Cornhusker program when it fell, stayed down for many years. Suffice it to say, Michigan no longer belongs up in powerhouse status (ineed Penn State doesn't either) in a conference now dominated by the Buckeyes and their endless string of championship.
Indeed, there is little to remove Michigan from the class of Iowa or Wisconsin as strong, but not dominating programs in the Big Ten. And if a 4th school was added to that mix, it would be MSU.
The Spartans have beaten U-M two straight. The first in Michigan's first bad season, two years ago in Ann Arbor. Last year in East Lansing. This year, however, it should be a close game (I couldn't find any betting lines yet...perhaps too early), but if MSU wins (more than a distinct possibility), this may tip football towards the Spartans inside, to go along with b'ball where it has been for years.
I think Michigan is one of the most competitive in-state situations for two flagship public universities. The tend to split the market fairly well as do IU and Purdue in Indiana, much more so than in states like Iowa (where Iowa generally rules over Iowa State) or Oklahoma (where OU has it over OkState). For all U-M's glory, MSU has always been a player.
It looks like it could be very interesting to see what happens at the Big House next weekend and where the rivalry will go....and who will have the upper hand.
should be a pretty good game and one that mich st. should win easily
but since it's a rivalry game, the spartans are coming off a hard fought game against a decent badgers team and they are on the road it will probably be closer than it should be
michigan has no standing to be a top 25 team ..... 5-0 is nice, but going to the last minute against umass and indiana isn't so nice
Could be. I like Dantonio and it just may be that Sparty of 2010 isn't the Sparty of old that starts off 4-0 or thereabouts and ends up 6-6 or 7-5 going into a bowl game that nobody cares about.
Of course, getting rid of John L Smith's junk recruits helps. Decent enough to rack up some numbers, but plenty of stupid plays and penalties in there as well.
Yea, they should still keep Rich Rod though. His ideas finally seem to be working on offense, now all he needs is a defense.
definitely don't disagree ..... needs at least another year .... his players and style are starting to emerge, it takes times to completely switch gears and if they got rid of him now they would need to white wash the roster again and burn another 2-3 years anyway until then next guys finger prints start to show

Couldn't agree more. Rich Rod's style is a complete 180 from what we had before. That kind of thing takes time to really develop. Besides - we don't want to turn into Notre Dame - firing people willy nilly at the expense of our program!
It was a sight to behold...Cousins threw no interceptions, Spartan penalties were down, Cousins' passes thrown were caught...third down conversions were made...no official errors were seen for later excuses.....It hurt to watch as the camera scanned the stands the shock and defeat on the faces of the uohum fans...a sad day in A2...
