I attended both the Lehigh/Central Connecticut State and Lafayette/Sacred Heart games this past weekend. Both were excellent games that weren't decided until the last play. In the Lehigh game, the Mountain Hawks' run defense was gashed repeatedly by CCSU for much of the game and they were down 20 points (37-17) with 10 1/2 minutes to go in the 4th quarter. However, Lehigh was able to score three touchdowns in about 6-7 minutes, all on drives that each took less than a minute. The Mountain Hawks could have taken the lead on the last TD, but their kicker hit the upright on the extra point. They still had to dodge a late CCSU drive; luckily CCSU's kicker missed about a 40 yard FG in the last minute. In the overtimes (or at least the second overtime), Lehigh's defense finally made a stand, allowing the Mountain Hawks to win the game. They did not lead in the game until the second overtime (when they got the ball first).
In the Lafayette game, neither team ever led by more than 7 points. The Leopards scored on the opening kickoff of the game on a 98 yard kickoff return, but Sacred Heart eventually took the lead late in the 1st half. Sacred Heart had a number of big plays, especially running plays, throughout the game. By contrast, Lafayette thwarted themselves multiple times in the red zone; twice in the 1st quarter they were stopped inside the Sacred Heart 2 yard line (turning it over on downs on the first possession and kicking a short FG on the second possession), and in the 3rd quarter the Leopards had a ball intercepted in the end zone when they were inside the Sacred Heart 20 yard line. Despite their red zone woes, Lafayette was able to score a go-ahead TD with 2-3 minutes left to take a 24-23 lead. However, Sacred Heart moved the ball on their final possession, and got down to the Lafayette 25 yard line. (They actually got to the 21 yard line, but the Sacred Heart QB was sacked on a scramble on a 3rd down play.) Sacred Heart opted to try the long 42 yard FG, using a kicker who never attempted a FG in a college game up to that point. (Their two field goals earlier in the game were kicked by a different placekicker.) The inexperienced kicker had just enough leg (it probably had 3 yards to spare) and was just accurate enough (just inside the left upright) to make the FG and give Sacred Heart a 26-24 win as time expired.
